GIRL 27
A David Stenn Film
Debuts on DVD October 16, 2007
Los Angeles CA (September 10, 2007) A buried Hollywood scandal is definitively unearthed in GIRL 27, the compelling new documentary by David Stenn. Based on Stenn’s acclaimed Vanity Fair article about rape victim Patricia Douglas, GIRL 27 will be available from Red Envelope Entertainment and Westlake Entertainment on DVD on October 16, 2007 at an SRP of $19.98.
In the 1930s – Hollywood’s Golden Era – no movie studio was more prestigious than Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. So when MGM summoned 120 teenage dancers to a casting call on May 5, 1937, none suspected they had been tricked into attending a wild stag party for studio salesmen. When dancer Patricia Douglas tried to flee, she was brutally raped; defying the studio’s order for silence, Douglas went public and filed a landmark lawsuit while MGM launched a massive cover-up. The result: Patricia Douglas vanished, and no mention of her case appeared again.
David Stenn stumbled on the story while researching his 1993 biography of Jean Harlow (whose death coincided with the Douglas case). Stunned that MGM had successfully expunged the event from history, Stenn began investigating. His decade-long search for the truth led to Patricia Douglas herself, nearly ninety and still in hiding. GIRL 27 depicts the heartfelt relationship between author and subject, and the only on-camera interview ever granted by Patricia Douglas.
GIRL 27 vindicates a heroic young woman who dared to make rape a civil rights case. Footage of David Stenn’s search for Patricia Douglas and her subsequent interview are combined with relevant clips from classic films, impeccably researched archival footage, and other scandalous secrets of 1930s Hollywood – including an interview with Clark Gable and Loretta Young’s secret “love child.”
An Official Selection of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, GIRL 27 arrives on DVD with a commentary track by David Stenn and the rare 1935 short Hollywood Extra Girl, a studio-sanitized portrayal of vulnerable starlets like Patricia Douglas.
